1. Introduction
This report was requested by Gary Connick, Marketing Manager of H&F Electronics on 26th April 26, 2011. The main aim of the report is to identify the causes of the poor market performance of the MP3 players and suggest ways to improve it.
Market survey was conducted by M&D Market Research Company and the data were used in this report. In this report, the causes of the poor performance will be analyzed. After that, recommendations are made to improve the competitiveness of this product line.
2. Findings 2.1 Overall performance A recent market survey conducted by M&D Market Research company shows that our MP3 players were satisfied with the sound quality and battery life of our MP3 players. However, compared to iGADGET MP3 players, there were some problems of our products in function and headphone quality.
2.2 Design The market surveys also shows that nearly half of our customers were not satisfied with the design of our MP3 players. The reason for this is that the design is old-fashion and the size of H&F players was larger than the other MP3 players, for example, iGADGET player. Also black and white were the only two choice in colors of our MP3 players. The implications of this are that the customers tends to buy iGADGET players because they provide more choices in colors and the size is smaller than H&F MP3 players.
2.3 Functions First, the customers were not satisfied with the functions of our MP3 players. It is because our MP3 players are not user friendly comparing to iGADGET MP3 players. It is not convenient for MP3 users to install a software program in their computer for transferring of music files on to H&F MP3 players.
2.4 Headphone quality In the headphone quality aspect, the quality of our headphone was low and customers were not satisfied with this quality. Since our players were made in Malaysia, the quality control problem occurred in the manufacturing process. Also the reputation of our players was not good because the players were made in Malaysia.
2.5 Market share As shown in attachment 2, the market share of H&F MP3 player was lower than iGADGET MP3 players and this gap were getting bigger from March 2010 to February 2011. The reasons for this are that the overall performance of H&F MP3 players was poorer than iGADGET MP3 player. Also the spokesperson promoting H&F MP3 players was too old and not suitable for promoting MP3 players to young users.
3. Conclusion
From the analysis made in the previous sections, the MP3 players provided by our company are suffering from intense competition in the market. Meanwhile, the MP3 players' competitiveness still has room for improvement, particularly in the areas of design, functions, headphone quality and spokesman. To refine and secure the future of this product line, changes are needed to be made.
4. Recommendations
After considering the above findings, the following recommendations are suggested.
4.1 Design
The design of the MP3 players needs to be redesigned. I suggest that encouragement can be sent to the design team to stimulate design innovation so that the design can be made in a more stylish and fashionable way. Furthermore, the player's case can be offered in more colours.
4.2 Functions
More user-friendly function should be added. It is recommended that the software development team should be instructed to design the user-interface in a more user-friendly style. Drag-and-drop function is recommended to be developed as soon as possible as this is a crucial function demanded by customer.
4.3 Headphone Quality
Better quality headphones should be offered. In terms of both reliability and sound quality, the level of quality should be raised. Since it is a time and capital consuming investment to improve our existing headphone plants, I propose that the headphone department should be closed down and outsources the processes to other third party manufacturer. The extra staff can be reallocated to other departments in order to increase the overall speed of development.
4.4 Market share
Finally, a better spokesperson should be hired. It is clear that the spokesperson we are employing do not match our new direction. I recommend that advertisement companies should be approached to find a more suitable spokesperson.
